Erosion of rivers, lakes and some pond banks can occur for a number of reasons, including wind, rain, flooding, cattle and even boat sports. While erosion is an issue, there are now many options available that allow us to correct, establish and rebuild damaged banks. We also have several methods available to prevent future erosion from occurring. Remember – prevention is always better than cure.
At Ponds UK, we can help advise you on river erosion. We are here to help and support you 7 days a week, to give you the best advice and help with any of the following:
- Project Management
Erosion can be a daunting task to deal with. Ponds UK can manage river erosion in the safest and most cost effective way, and will support you in getting the very best value for your money.
Here are some of the Key Materials on todays market that we currently use
Nicospan is a special form of Nicolon manufactured by Ten Cate, designed specifically for vertical bank protection. Nicospan provides high quality protection at a comparatively affordable cost, offering effective erosion control whilst also effective for island construction, and bank restructuring and redevelopment.
Nicospan is a prefabricated revetment, consisting of a weave double weave fabric made produced with a monofilament yarn that is both UV-stabilised and heat sealed. It is this heat sealing that provides a series of pockets measuring a width of 220mm, allowing 100mm posts to be placed into them.
Nicospan can be purchased in rolls of 100 metres in length. Standard widths include 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 metres. This form of bank prevention is useful in banks where access is limited and the bank requires widening. It is an affordable form of bank protection ideal for use in a range of watercourses, streams, lakes and ponds.
Why use Nicospan:
- Erosion Control
- Bank protection
- Construction works
- Flood protection
- Permanent erosion protection
- River banks, channels, canals
- River training / Diversion
- Rivers and canals
- Water margins
- Silt trap
Eco-islands help aquatic communities to produce a balanced, self-sustaining ecosystem. They consist of a collection of habitat sanctuaries which are located both below and above the water, encouraging the colonisation of amphibians, invertebrates, dragonflies and, of course, fish.
Once eco-islands have been installed in the water body, restocking costs become considerably cheaper, whilst fish loss is kept at bay from direct predation. Eco-islands provide a refuge that is proven to reduce the mortality associated not just from direct predation, but through the stress caused from surviving such attacks. Furthermore, the introduction of spawning habitats helps to improve a healthy population expansion, contributing to a far healthier stock.
- Help reduce bank erosion
- Provide wildlife sanctuaries
- Provide features in fishing lakes
- Offer protection from predators
- Reduce nutrients and help absorb pollutants
- Available in Square or any other shape
- Create a natural food larder
- Enhance any fishery large or small
- Highly cost effective
Bioengineering with coir fibre products is an effective way of both vegetating and stabilising eroding banks on rivers and lakes. It comprises a balanced mix of ecological, biological and engineering processes, which include vegetation growth and a range of natural materials. The result is that plants enjoy a healthy development that also helps to secure the bank. A selection of native UK plants have been carefully chosen for use in coir products, thanks to their ability to thrive in a range of conditions. They are also a haven fish, invertebrate and wildlife.
Lake and River Enhancement Works help with:
- Immediate & effective erosion control
- Facing of Nicospan
- Rapid Vegetation redevelopment
- Preservation of wildlife habitat
- Year round installation
- Haven for wildlife & invertebrates
- Banks rapid return to its natural state
- Rapid root anchorage to the bank
Gabions made from welded mesh and contain stone, making them a strong, sturdy form of erosion control. Gabions can also be sourced locally, allowing them to blend more seamlessly into the landscape, offering an aesthetically pleasing and effective bank erosion solution.
Gabions are ideal for the construction of the following:
- River Walls
- Drainage channels
- Coastal defences
- Retaining walls and many other applications.
ROCK ROLLS (click here for more information)
Rock Rolls have been specially designed to work effectively with coir fibre rolls as well as provide toe protection. They act as small, permanent yet flexible gabions which can be used for a variety of purposes.
In turbulent waters, Rock Rolls can be used to provide a solid bed on which coir fibre rolls can be planted. Roots grown from vegetation on this rolls are able to quickly grow into the gaps of the Rock Rolls, offering long-term bank protection and erosion control.
Brushwood faggots are an effective organic form of revetment ideal for use in a range of river banks, lake edges and streams. They are particularly effective against scour issues below water level, when bioengineering is not practical. Faggots can last up to ten years in anaerobic environments.
Faggots provide an organic, effective and sustainable habitat, particularly when used alongside live willow, coir rolls and coir pallets. They can help encourage the growth of native invertebrate and crayfish populations.
